Clifftops; Wombarra

Created for the Illawarra Festival of Architecture join us as we dive into the creative vision of architect Mike Vail in this exclusive interview.

This project was a testament to the power of collaboration, where architect, builder, and client worked closely to bring a shared vision to life.

Crafted in collaboration with CKS Projects, Clifftops is a stunning retreat perched on the cliffs of Wombarra on New South Wales’ breathtaking South Coast. This architectural gem seamlessly combines the principles of Japanese design — simplicity, harmony with nature, and an emphasis on craftsmanship — with the warm, cozy ambiance of Danish hygge philosophy.

Vail's approach embraces the natural contours of the cliffside location, allowing the design to blend into its environment rather than dominate it. The space emphasises tranquility, functionality, and a thoughtful use of natural materials, creating a harmonious and immersive coastal sanctuary.

Through this project, Vail and the CKS team show how cross-cultural influences can come together to create a timeless, restful space. Don’t miss out on a tour of this incredible structure and a look into the mind of one of Australia’s leading architects.
